This rather fidgety selection starts with a ghost train instrumental, moves into synthpop territory, has a goth moment, picks up the acoustic for some offbeat tenderness, makes a large noise, does a bit more of the tender stuff, then goes back to electronics for the low-key Truthless, the catchy and rather sick Wax Violet, the absurdist Videoesque, a piece of pure electronic pop and a final freakout.
The album was put together by Andy during Leicester days, so there’s not much group playing apart from the opening and closing freakouts. Heralding the next few years’ developments, a couple of the solo tracks use individually-sampled drum hits from Bob arranged to attempt the impression of a band performance (why we didn’t just get organised and learn/record/swap parts by tape, I’ll never know), and the Buzz tracker software makes its first appearance on “Doogies”.
